Working students and Grooms:

Job Description:

Working students work full-time 5 to 6 days a week. Agricultural work is not a 9-5 job, it is a lifestyle. This is a position for someone who can withstand long, hard days and have an understanding that the work must be completed before the day is over. This position is best suited to individuals who are interested in becoming a professional in the horse business. This is an opportunity to receive education and exposure to high quality dressage breeding, starting of young horses, and advanced training on an international level.

  • Housing for you and board for your horse are options that are available. Housing would include a private room with shared bath and kitchen faciities. Board for your horse is available at my home stable. Large stall and/or paddock, 110x220 outdoor arena with good footing, hot wash rack and heated tack room are some of the amenities. We live in a rural area. Having your own car is not a requirement, but definitely a huge advantage. You must have a valid drivers license. Ability to operate manual transmission a plus.
  • students receive comprehensive training on the care, health, breeding, and training of dressage horses,
  • Working students are responsible for the keeping the stable at Summervale and at home clean, well organized, and running smoothly. Students are expected to monitor and help maintain the health and well-being of the horses. Authority and responsibilities are earned based on the performance and level of care shown by the student. The horses' well-being is always first priority.

Requirements:

  • Must be physically fit and able to carry out the demands of the job, which includes handling of horses, cleaning stalls, unloading grain bags, etc.
  • Previous riding or dressage experience is not necessary, but can be an advantage.
  • Must be self-starter, well organized, and be highly motivated. Must be able to think ahead, solve problems, think on your feet, and work well with others. You must be a team player.
  • You must be reliable, trustworthy, responsible and able to stay on task even when the going gets rough.
  • Good work ethic and ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
  • It is advantageous to have clear equine goals of your own.
  • Must have a commitment to correct training and development of horses. Must have a commitment to furthering your own education, and be willing to take responsibility for your own learning.

Job Duties may include the following:

  • Feeding and watering of horses
  • Stall cleaning
  • Grooming, clipping, braiding, and bathing of horses
  • Barn clean up
  • Assisting with training of horses
  • Exercising and turnout of horses
  • Administration of medicines and medical care of horses.
  • Occasional horse and house sitting when I am out of town.

Compensation and pay:

  • Relative to experience . Housing, board for your horse, lessons, and/or a small salary are all possible.
